Why I made SleepSHAKE
I'm Dominique McAdam, co-founder of LifeLab&Co.
For about 30 years I ran a Sydney kitchen and cabinetry business, designing bespoke hand-painted timber kitchens. It's detailed work, and it came home with me. Most nights I'd be awake at 3am, going over drawings, quotes and the next day's installs.
Sleeping tablets were never going to work for me. My days started early: up at 5.30 and on a job site by 6.30. I couldn't afford anything that knocked me out and left me groggy in the morning.
I went looking for another way and ended up with six jars in the cupboard. A tablet here, something in cold water there, something in hot water, milk for another, each with its own dose and its own directions. It was a hassle every single night, and not a routine anyone sticks to.
So we made one. Formulated by a clinical nutritionist.
What we wanted it to be
Easy. One jar, two scoops, a quick shake (hence the name), 30 minutes before bed. Simple enough to become a nightly ritual.
Small. A little cold water, not a big glass of anything before bed.
Not a knockout. SleepSHAKE is melatonin free and isn't made to knock you out: it's made to enhance sleep quality and increase deep sleep.
Clean. No milk, no added sugar, no maltodextrin.
How we made it
We went through several formulations before we landed on Midnight Berry: a light berry flavour that's easy to drink in a little cold water.
We took our early formulas to pharmacies and health professionals for feedback, right down to the parts of the formulation that never show up on the front of a pack. The formula we ended up with has no maltodextrin. What we use instead costs more and took longer to get right, and I'd make that call again.
Every ingredient and every dose was chosen on purpose, and we didn't skimp on quality or amounts. Every active is in each serve at the dose printed on the jar: 3 g glycine, 350 mg magnesium as glycinate and citrate, 600 mg ashwagandha, 520 mg reishi and 51 mg Chamomile with Apigenin. It's made in Australia and listed on the ARTG (AUST L 524569).
